Vegan in Battambang
Battambang is a city not to be missed in Cambodia! There are so many unique things to do and explore there, and the atmosphere seemed a little bit more local which was really nice after visiting the very touristy city of Siem Reap. We only had 2 short days in Battambang, but I still managed to eat some good vegan meals during my time there.
Jaan Bai
Street 2 in next to Psar Nat, Krong Battambang, Cambodia
The restaurant itself is not fully vegan, but had tons of vegan items clearly marked on the menu. In fact, there were so many options, it was hard to decide what to eat! If you’re a vegan, I’m sure you understand that this is a rare occurrence. Since I just couldn’t decide on one dish, I decided to order three starters instead of a main. I got the Shitake Oyster Mushroom Bao, Corn Fritters, and Eggplant and Mushroom Dumplings. All three dishes were delicious, and the best part? A share of the restaurant’s profits goes towards child protection and community development. If you only have time to visit one restaurant in Battambang, make it this one!
Coconut Ice Cream Stand
Near St 121 (at the corner of St 121 and Rd No 2) Battambang, Cambodia
I’ve had my fair share of vegan ice cream, coconut vegan ice cream at that, and yet this ice cream takes the gold. A nice gentleman and who I’m assuming to be his mother run this small stand on the streets of Battambang. The ice cream is made from 100% coconut and is even served in a coconut shell. The ice cream is usually topped with condensed milk so if you are vegan, make sure to ask them to omit it! You can also add peanuts as a topping which I thought complimented the ice cream perfectly!
Bonlai Til I Die
66 Rd No 2.5, Krong Battambang, Cambodia
This place is a real gem in Battambang. It serves up some creative vegan pizza pies and a vegan caesar salad! I feel like a good caesar salad is something I took for granted before becoming vegan, but after eating one at Bonlai Til I Die, I remembered how much I love them! As for the pizza, I got the mushroom and spinach one (which was really tasty), but they also offer ones with potato and onion, pumpkin and chickpea, broccoli and zucchini, and more!
Lan Chov Khorko Miteanh
Near White Rose Restaurant, Battambang 02000, Cambodia
I always love a good hole in the wall restaurant, so when I heard about this Chinese noodle restaurant in Battambang, I had to check it out! I had read online that it was vegetarian-friendly, so I went to see if any of those options were vegan or could be made vegan. Much to my dismay, when I asked the owners about the ingredients in the popular vegetarian dumplings, he told me that they contained egg. However, he told me that the vegetarian noodle soup did not contain, meat, eggs, milk, seafood, etc. These noodles were delicious and after speaking to the owner about the ingredients, I felt safe eating them. That being said, eating in a non-vegan restaurant in a foreign country can be risky, so approach with caution and make your own judgment call!
Kinyei Cafe
Rd No 1.5, Krong Battambang, Cambodia
This adorable cafe is tucked away on a small street near the Central Market. It was packed when we went, but still, the atmosphere was cozy and relaxing. Many people were reading books, writing, or working on their laptop. As I glanced at the menu, I noticed that there were a few vegetarian options that could be veganized including a salad, wrap, sandwich, and more. They also offer soy milk for non-dairy lattes or cappuccinos. Unfortunately, I wasn’t hungry when I visited Kinyei Cafe, so I didn’t get to try any of the vegan food here. Since it was so hot outside, I wanted something cold, and a nice, refreshing carrot juice ended up being the perfect treat!
Sangke View Restaurant (Tourist Boat Dock)
Street 1, Phum 20 ousa phea, Battambang,, Cambodia
So, a friend and I actually stumbled upon this restaurant by accident. After a day of exploring, we ended up at the Battambang Night Market hoping to find some good street food. Unfortunately, there didn’t appear to be a lot of vegan options and nothing really stuck out to us, so we gave up and started to walk back to our hotel. On the way, we came across the Sangke View Restaurant and decided to just check it out. After looking at the menu and talking to the staff about vegan options, we decided to stay and order vegetable fried rice (hold the egg) and deep fried mushrooms. The portions at the place were huge, the food was good, and the view of the river was really nice! Sangke View Restaurant ended up being a really nice find!
