Vegan Food in Kampot, Cambodia

After a week of relaxation on the beaches of Koh Rong, My friend and I decided to spend some time in Kampot before heading to our last destination in Cambodia, Phnom Penh. The atmosphere of Kampot is pretty slow and laid back, but it still offers plenty to see and do. We couldn’t have picked a better time to visit because it just so happened to be Cambodian New Year which was so much fun to experience! I really enjoyed all of the holiday festivities. However, this also meant that many of the restaurants I planned on visiting were closed. Regardless, I ate some really delicious vegan food in Kampot, and now have yet another reason to go back one day.

Kampot had the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen in my life.

Eden Eco Village

Address: 369, Krong Kampot 07000, Cambodia

When visiting Kampot, this place is a must for your accommodation! For both my friend and I, staying in an eco-friendly bungalow was one of the most memorable parts of our trip. Apart from offering beautiful views, tubes/kayaks, and free yoga classes, Eden Eco Village also served up some amazing vegan food. I enjoyed a good handful of meals there, but if I had to recommend just one, I would definitely say to try the banana blossom salad. It was so fresh and flavorful with a good amount of crunch in it!

Khmer Roots Cafe

Address: Near the Secret Lake

If you are looking for some very local vegan food in Kampot, look no further than Khmer Roots Cafe. This roadside restaurant is located in a pretty rural area part of Kampot and is owned and ran by a local family. When I visited, it was a mother and daughter who cooked our food to order in their humble open-air kitchen. Keep in mind, this is not a vegan restaurant and its menu is quite small, so there are not many options at all. That being said, I absolutely loved my curry and enjoyed the environment of the restaurant (they have cats!). Although I didn’t personally get to experience it, Khmer Roots Cafe also offers cooking classes which I’ve read a lot of positive reviews about.

Simple Things

Address: Old Market, Street, 54, Krong Kampot, Cambodia

In almost every city I visit, I find a restaurant that I wish I could eat multiple meals at. Unfortunately (or fortunately, rather), there’s always so much vegan food to explore and so little time. Simple Things is a vegetarian restaurant with clearly marked vegan options on the menu, and there were plenty to choose from! Between my friend and I, we ordered the guacamole smoothie, eggplant caviar, hummus sandwich, and lentils with oyster mushrooms. We enjoyed everything except the guacamole smoothie. We saw that one coming but were too curious not to try it. Eating our food, I realized why the restaurant is called “Simple Things”. They made dishes with really simple ingredients taste out of this world. Try the lentils with oyster mushrooms, and you’ll understand.

Ecran Noodles

Address: Street 735, Krong Kampot, Cambodia

I love when a non-vegan restaurant starts to embrace the plant-based movement by offering clearly labeled vegan items on their menu. Ecran Noodles went above and beyond this by having a whole section of their menu explain how their food is cooked to ensure that your food is 100 percent vegan and cross-contamination can be avoided. I ordered the vegetable fried noodles (ask to leave out the oyster sauce) and boiled vegetable dumplings. Both the food and the prices were impressive. I mean, vegan hand-pulled noodles and 12 homemade dumplings for $5? It simply can’t be beat!

Simon’s

Address: A8-A9, Old Market, Krong Kampot, Kampot 07000, Cambodia

Simon’s was around the corner from our hotel and one of the only restaurants nearby that was open during the holiday so naturally, we ended up there for lunch one day. I love Indian cuisine, but don’t eat it as often as I would like to. It had literally been years since I last had a dosa (unacceptable, I know) so when I saw they had dosa on the menu, I immediately knew what I was going to order. I got the masala dosa with a lime juice to drink which ended up being the perfect combination. Think…spicy potatoes wrapped in a crispy Indian-style crepe with a cool, citrusy lime juice to wash it down. Yep, it was amazing. Just make sure to tell the server that you are vegan, and they can help you order!

Baraca

Address: #7, Sreet 726, Kampot, Cambodia, Krong Kampot, Cambodia

Two words. Vegan. Tapas. Baraca is a total gem and should not be missed when exploring the vegan food in Kampot! Baraca serves up two of my favorite things: creative cocktails and delicious vegan food. The staff is so friendly and there is a whole separate vegan menu which makes ordering easy. We ordered the hummus pintxo, patatas bravas, and palak tofu. The hummus pintxo was especially tasty, unique, and worth ordering.

Burger Shack

Address: A26 Old Market Street, Kampot 07000, Cambodia

Burger Shack was one of those restaurants that I stalked on Instagram long before visiting Kampot. I knew that they served up a delicious vegan burger and some seitan nuggets from time to time. As much as I love eating local cuisine when traveling, but I always get to a certain point when I really crave something more familiar. I can’t think of anything that reminds me more of home than a burger and fries, and Burger Shack definitely fulfilled my need for a taste of home. Side note: french fries are my favorite food so I consider myself a french fry connoisseur, and these fries were to die for!

Pupe Thai Kitchen

Address: Tin Pan Alley, In back of Moi Tiet Bar

Pupe Thai Kitchen is truly a hidden gem. So hidden, in fact, it took us a while to find it. It’s a simple restaurant tucked away in a little back alley, but the food is incredible and well worth hunting down. As far as vegan options go, the menu clearly states that they can make anything vegetarian or vegan by request. My friend ordered the eggplant with sweet basil and I ordered the khao soi. We both were really pleased with our dishes! Although I loved the vegan food in Kampot, eating such delicious and authentic Thai food definitely made us excited for our upcoming trip to Thailand!

Rikitikitavi

Address: Riverside Road (next to the post office) Kampot, Cambodia 07451

Let me start off by saying this restaurant has an excellent view of the river and is a great place to catch the sunset at! Normally, I like to watch the sunset while enjoying a glass of wine or beer, but when I saw vegan ice cream on the menu, I just couldn’t resist. All of the vegan options were sorbet which usually disappoints me to be honest, but Rikitikitavi actually had some interesting flavors of sorbet which made it more exciting. We ordered a scoop of the Strawberry Basil and a scoop of Coconut Chili. The coconut chili was my favorite because I love a good spicy, sweet combination and those flavors together in a creamy sorbet was perfection.

Good Morning Kampot

Address: 735, Kampong Bay Bridge, Krong Kampot, Cambodia

The budget hotel that we stayed at was the last place I would have excepted to find some vegan food in Kampot, and yet they had a few vegan options on their menu. I was especially surprised to see vegan pancakes as an option but spoke to the owner who confirmed it was vegan (You can never be too safe, right!?). I love breakfast food but prefer savory meals so I rarely eat pancakes. However, I can say without a doubt these were the best pancakes I’ve ever had in my life. They were so fluffy and light! On another occasion, I got a vegetable scramble which was essentially potatoes and other various veggies covered in tomato sauce and topped with sauerkraut.
